Sealing
Unique ID: CAM-3793F4
Object type certainty: Certain
A lead sealing dating to the Roman period. The sealing is approximately oval in shape and hemispherical in section. The sealing possesses a circular perforation running its width which would have originally secured the chord which attached the sealing to a package or document. On the upper flat surface of the sealing is a stamped rectangular panel. The raised letters AL[...]//VIA are visible within this panel. Roger Tomlin, Oxford University has commented that the logical interpretation of this inscription would be 'ALAE VI A[...]' although he knows of no known 'ala' in Britain. The sealing has a length of 24mm, a width of 16mm and a thickness of 10mm.
Inscription: AL[...]//VIA
