Fragment of a foot ring from a Roman Samian ware vessel. This bright red pottery was imported into Britain during the Roman period. It was mass produced in the region that is now the border between modern France and Germany. The foot ring is a low pedestal type ring formed on the base of a vessel to enable it to stand more securely. Foot rings were often found on bowls and some beakers. At the centre on the inside of the vessel there is a makers stamp at the centre; this gives the name of the potter who produced the vessel; this stamp reads []VIVI (it is stamped backwards on the pot). On the underside of the foot ring there appears to be some scratched graffiti this is possible the owners name but it is indecipherable. The piece weighs 18.31g and measures 51.58mm in length, 38.3mm in width and 14.47mm in thickness.
