A complete post-medieval gold 1-Escudo of Joanna of Castile (AD 1504-1555) and Aragon (AD 1516-1555) and Charles I of Spain (AD 1516-1556), eventually Emperor Charles V, king of Germany and Italy (AD 1519-1556), mint: Seville (mint marks S and star; Cayon and Clemente no 3146), dating to 1535-55. Ref: Cayon and Clemente 2005: p.473.
Obverse: Cross of Jerusalem within a quatrefoil, with inverted leaf terminals, within a pelleted border. Legend around the outside.
Obverse Legend: + HISPANIARVM o REGES o SICILIE
Reverse: Within a beaded circle, a crowned squared shield containing the Habsburg arms of Spain (Castile, Leon, Aragon, Granada, Naples, Sicily and Jerusalem). Shield is flanked by an 'S' to the observer's left, and a '*' [Star] to the right. Legend around the outside.
Reverse legend: IOANNA o ET o KAROLVS o
It measures 24.1mm in diameter, 1.3mm in thickness, and weighs 6.03g.
Only five other Spanish gold 1-Escudo coins from this period have been recorded on the PAS database, namely: LIN-899C79; IOW-1A4E1E; IOW-14E016; KENT-5E0C7C, LANCUM-8DFC42.
Notes:
Foreign gold coins are rare stray finds in Britain, and this is the first find of a Spanish gold coin recorded by the PAS from Lancashire.
