CLOTH SEAL

Unique ID: SOMDOR-9EF300

Object type certainty: Certain

A post-medieval lead cloth seal of the two disc type. The front of the seal depicts an ornate shield with an erect sword, four mullets to the side of the sword and a cross above it. The back is marked with the number 19. The arms are those of the city of Haarlem in the Netherlands, and the number 19 represents the length of the cloth measured in Dutch ells. The inscription on the front means goods from Haarlem. This seal is similar to number 321 in Geoff Egan's catalogue of lead cloth seals in the British Museum. Lead seals were attached to cloth as an official indication of its quality. Two-part disc seals were joined in the centre by a connecting strip. One disc was perforated and the other contained a rivet, so that the two discs would affix together when the connecting strip was folded (Egan 1994, pp. viii, 1).

Inscription: Obverse: [HAERLE]MS GOET, reverse: 19
