BROOCH

Unique ID: HAMP468

Object type certainty: Certain

Cylindrical head surmounted by a small loop. The catchplate remains behind a moderately flared foot. Spring pin with three turns; mostly missing. The bow is decorated with a column of four triangular cells on either side. These are likely to have held coloured enamel, though no trace now survives. Even patina.

Notes:

A similar but undecorated example was found at Fishbourne (Cunliffe 1971, 104 no. 38 fig. 39). Knee brooches are a Continental form, possibly originating in the Rhine area of Germany. There is a preponderance of finds in northern Britain. Enamelled examples are not particularly common. One example with two spots of red enamel inset into the bow near the head was found at Aldborough, North Yorkshire (Bishop 1996, 52 no. 309 fig. 30).
