Kate studied archaeology at the University of Southampton for her first degree and thereafter a Master's degree in Museum Studies at University College London. After university Kate worked on collections management for the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, Cambridge , sorting through its collections of British and worldwide archaeology across all periods. Since 2002 she has also worked as Finds Assistant for the Cambridge Archaeology Unit, splitting her time between the museum and the archaeological unit.
