Short profile:

Stephanie Smith is the new Finds Liaison Officer for Sussex, replacing Laura Burnett who has begun a FLO position in Somerset.  She recently graduated from the MA Program in Artefact Studies from the University College London's Institute of Archaeology.  During her time at UCL, she worked on PAS-sponsored projects and research, including an internship with Ros Tyrrell (FLO for Buckinghamshire), and wrote her dissertation on small finds from the Roman fortress in Caerleon, Wales.  She has been fortunate to participate in projects that have given her a wide experience with different object types and is excited to explore the archaeological heritage of Sussex!
Stephanie grew up in the state of Michigan in the US.  Some of her earliest excavation work included a Huron American Indian settlement site and a Mesolithic site in Yorkshire, which was a shared project with Bradford University.  Her interests developed to include Roman Archaeology and she moved to beautiful Boulder, Colorado to finally obtain her MA in Classical Art & Archaeology in 2007.  In addition to other projects, Stephanie was able to excavate at the Villa of Maxentius in Rome, as well as to assist in the Kythera Island Project, partially sponsored by University College London.  During that time, she both furthered her interest in archaeology and small finds identification and got to know faculty and student members of the Institute of Archaeology, where she began study in 2009.
Stephanie would love to hear from anyone who has found objects they would like to identify and record.  She is located at the Barbican House Museum in Lewes, East Sussex and will be scheduling finds events in conjunction with multiple local museums throughout the year.  For further details about the Portable Antiquities Scheme or to arrange an appointment you are welcome to contact her directly.
